Ovä is a high-end, vape brand that aims to provide smokers with a chic, high-quality vaping experience. By combining conscious habits and luxurious experiences, they offer a low-nicotine range of products that may help consumers work towards cessation. The main goal of this project was to design the packaging for three of their products:  the starter kit, the device kit and the pod kit. Keeping the original brand identity in mind, I designed a few packaging options that reflected their brand image and made them stand out from the other vape brands.

How to stand out from other brands through packaging design?

To begin this project, I started by sketching a few box designs. Inspired by their brand identity, I initially created a circular, curved design for the boxes. Below is a sneak peek of the early-stage development.

The Starter Kit includes an information booklet, one device, two pods, and a charger for the vape device. Inspired by Apple's iPhone packaging design, I created a curved-edge cube box that can be opened up like a book with multiple compartments on the inside.

Ovä's team loved the curved round look for the starter and device kits. After sketching a few more ideas, I proposed a cylinder-like box that could be pulled apart from the top. Both the device kit and starter kit were the same diameter, which allowed them to be stacked on top of one another.

Intial device kit design

The device kit was designed similar to the starter kit, it contains the information booklet, a device, and a charger.  The information booklet is enclosed in a paper sleeve. The section with the device has a handle on each side to hold the device in place.

Intial pod kit design

The pod kit has four different pod flavors and an information booklet. The section with the pods sits ontop of the container that holds the information booklet. I added a tab on the side to allow it to be lifted off the box.

After review, we decided to use a square or rectangular shape for the boxes as it was more economical for Ovä at the time. Below is a glimpse of the re-designed packaging based on this decision.

To reflect Ovä's brand identity through their packaging, I made sure to include their brand patterns and colors throughout the design, including the information booklet.

This box only has one section, which holds the device, the chager and information booklet. The booklet sits underneath the charger.

Main takeaways

  1. Involve engineering upfront. This helps to reduce any rework later on as an understanding of the technical limitations upfront will help to inform your design strategy.

  2. Create a strategic plan to launch a product. This helps deal with out-of-scope requests that could potentially derail the project and helps deliver a quality product in time.
